Be Still and Listen

Proverbs 18:13

He who answers before listening that is his folly and shame.

Proverbs 18:21

The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.

Have you ever asked a question and then asked another question before the person could answer the first one? Have you ever asked a question and then got up to do something as the person starts to speak?

I have a habit of multi-tasking while speaking to someone.  For example a person has come over to visit and I need to put some things away in the pantry so as they speak I go back and forth from the room listening but not intently and giving them my full attention.   I have decided to call myself out for a challenge to do less multi-tasking and more being still and really listening and focusing on the person speaking.  If you are a talker than you know that when you feel like you are not heard you get upset.

One of the worst things you can do is ignore someone.  I know this from experience as an adult.  When someone you cared about shuts you out completely or walk’s right past you and does not look at you or acknowledge your existence, is both painful and heartbreaking.  If you have never experienced it yourself I hope you do not but if you are doing this to someone you need to stop and ask them and God for forgiveness.

Treat others as you want to be treated and listen to others before you assume and foolishly speak.
